Overview
Neuropathic pain arises from damage or dysfunction of the nervous system itself producing characteristic sensations of burning, shooting, stabbing, electric-shock pain, and abnormal sensitivity (allodynia and hyperalgesia) that are notoriously difficult to treat with standard analgesics. Common causes include nerve compression, diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles), complex regional pain syndrome, and nerve injury following surgery or trauma. Dr Malik’s specialist neuropathic pain service begins with accurate characterisation of the pain type and underlying mechanism, followed by targeted interventional treatment including nerve blocks and neuromodulation that can provide significant, sustained relief where medication alone has been insufficient.
